Exercise rehabilitation
Initial assessment
All new patients need to come for an initial assessment, where I will talk through your history, perform a hands-on assessment of your injury, and look at how you are moving. Assessments sometimes include a small amount of sports massage, as this helps me understand what is happening within the tissues.
Depending on the findings of the assessment, I will usually give you some home care advice to keep you going while I go away and write your exercise rehabilitation plan. This plan will be unique to you, your injury, your current abilities, and your goals.
Please note that in some cases, following your assessment, I might refer you to another healthcare practitioner or personal trainer if I think they can better meet your needs.
Follow-up sessions
Following your assessment (usually a week later), I will meet you for your first follow-up appointment. I will show you your exercises, watch you perform them, ask you how they feel, and adjust the difficulty and quantity as needed.
This is an essential part of achieving the 'Goldilocks principle' and making sure we are using just the right amount of load to create positive change in your body.
You will be asked to keep up with your exercises at home, and subsequent follow-up sessions can be arranged to monitor your progress, and move you onto more challenging exercises as time goes by.
Once you are are ready to return to the gym or to your sport, I can help refer you to a personal trainer if you would like some ongoing support.
